Hugely successful RuPaul's Drag Race alumni Alaska 5000 is set to don the judge's cap herself as she oversees an epic Lip Sync Battle at National Student Pride on Saturday 6th February at the University of Westminster, Marylebone.

The battle will follow on from the earlier panel discussions on Coming Out, YouTube and Mental Health to provide a light-hearted way to close the daytime activities.

Those wanting to apply to take part in the Lip Sync Battle should e-mail lip@studentpride.co.uk for further details.

The most creative and exciting lip syncs pitched to the organisers will be chosen to perform for Alaska on the day.

When we confirmed the news Student Co-Chair Hatti Smart said. "YAAAAAAASSSSSSS" and the proceeded to send lots of gifs. Ollie James Parr, Festival Director and drag queen extraordinair said: "Je Suis Excited" adding "There is always a fun element at Student Pride, part of why it's such a great event. I'm pleased that this will compliment the important topics at the event by providing some rest bite at the end"

Alaska is best known as the runner-up on Season 5 of RuPaul's Drag Race. Since the airing of the show Alaska has had phenomenal success, touring the world, releasing albums and, in 2014, becoming a spokesmodel for American Apparel alongside fellow RuPaul competitors Willam and Courtney Act.

Lip Sync Battle is the breakout entertainment TV show of 2015, broadcast on Spike in the USA and Channel 5 in the UK. Notable performances have included Anne Hathaway recreating Miley Cyrus' 'Wrecking Ball' and Channing Tatum being joined by Beyonce for a rendition of 'Run The World (Girls)' and Frozen.

See the announcement video, which is downloadable and embeddable below.

To apply please e-mail lip@studentpride.co.uk detailing the song you would like to lip sync and an overview of what your performance will entail. Remember, the more creative and prepared the performances are the more likely you are to be chosen as a contestant. Think props, extravagance and OTT performances.

There is a prize for the winner, on top of the fact you get to perform for Alaska TBA.

Notes to editors

  1. Last year’s event was given the British LGBT Awards ‘Best Event’ award beating London and Brighton Pride in the category.

  2. The event began at Oxford Brookes University in 2005 as a response to the Christian Union’s ‘Homosexuality and the Bible’ talk. Student Pride will continue spreading a message of acceptance in its 11th year, and continue to fight the LGBTphobia that is unfortunately just as prevalent as it was when we started. That’s why a University campus is our choice of venue.

  3. You can see the full lineup here, including panels on Coming Out, Mental Health and LGBT YouTubers. Plus two night’s out at G-A-Y Heaven, with Saturday night themed as a ‘Scream Queens’ party. You’ll also find a intimate screening of Milk with Q&A with Harvey Milk’s Nephew Stuart Milk taking place on the sunday of the weekend.

  4. Every panel at Student Pride has confirmed, at least one LBQ women, one trans person and one person of colour. Diversity is vital at events - the LGBT community is a huge spectrum that goes long behind four letters, our definition of LGBT certainly does. Speaking at Student Pride 2014 Stonewall Co-Founder Lisa Power MBE said, “if they come for us it doesn’t matter if we are L, G, B or T. They’ll come for all of us” We couldn’t have put it better ourselves. This drives everything we do - Solidarity with voices that need amplification.

  5. Paris Lees wrote in her Attitude column after the 2015 event "The welcoming of Trans people by gay community is exciting, one of the most exciting things to happen for trans progress since the Internet. Nowhere was this more apparent than at Student Pride.”

  6. Tickets for the event are now on sale, and are available on the Student Pride website. www.studentpride.co.uk/tickets

  7. A host of media sponsors who year on year have a huge contribution in enabling the event have already confirmed coverage of the event including Attitude magazine, Gay Star News, The Telegraph’s LGBT History Month Magazine, audioBoom and QX magazine. - Last year the event made international headlines with Dustin Lance Black’s comments on Hollywood agents and the announcement of a Trans storyline on Eastenders. National #StudentPride - 5th-7th February
Returns to London for its 11th year hosted at the University of Westminster’s Marylebone campus and the infamous G-A-Y night clubs. This year the event’s main focus is tackling the vital but difficult conversation of mental health stigma. The free daytime festival that takes place on the Saturday of the weekend will also have panels with celebrities, activists and politicians with RUComingOut.com, looking at angles of coming out you might not have thought of, plus LGBT YouTubers are lining up to discuss the impact of the platform on changing perceptions and giving hope to young people. Then of course, #StudentPride does Lip Sync. Plus cabaret, live music and you can even bag yourself a job at the biggest LGBT careers fair in the UK.
